Beware Trump’s 'war on terror': Robert Verkaik

Robert Verkaik, an independent journalist, quotes APPG Chairman Andrew Tyrie in an article on the possible consequences of any new US torture programme for the UK intelligence agencies.

Writing in the i Paper, Verkaik reported that Andrew Tyrie had “warned of the security risks of Britain being ‘sucked into’ a beefed up torture and rendition programme”.

The article quotes a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May from Reprieve, a human rights organisation, calling for guarantees that the UK will not facilitate further abuses by the US:

“Fifteen years after 9/11, there is now a real risk that British officials will find themselves mixed up in American torture all over again. It is imperative that you affirm Britain’s abhorrence of torture, and direct UK officials never to cooperate with US military or intelligence operations that may lead to further abductions and abuse.”
